Internal platform confronts Google and Facebook on home turf

Domestic digital platforms such as messaging application, Zalo social network, Coc Coc browser are still competing and have high rankings when ranked with global technology giants.

DecisionLab has just released its Connected Consumer report for the third quarter of 2024.

DecisionLab's statistics show that the top social media platforms in Vietnam are still familiar names such as Facebook, Zalo, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.

Currently, Facebook is maintaining its leading position in social media with a penetration rate of up to 94% of Internet users.

Zalo is currently ranked 2nd with a penetration rate of 90%. 

In the social media segment, the emergence of Threads is emerging.

The more tech-savvy Gen Z generation uses an average of 3 social media apps for daily activities, compared to 2 in previous generations. 

Facebook is still the most important platform for the young generation of Vietnam.

Livestreaming continues to be a prominent trend in the e-commerce market, bringing a revolution to the online shopping experience of Internet users.

Browser: Chrome still dominates

Facebook is currently the leading platform in terms of penetration, accounting for 62% of the live streaming market share in Vietnam. 

TikTok currently maintains its dominant position in the short video segment in Vietnam with a penetration rate of 64%.

The internal platform Zalo Video is currently maintaining stable growth, reaching a penetration rate of 20%, holding the 4th position in the rankings.

In the browser segment, the top 3 positions in terms of PC usage in Vietnam are Google Chrome, Coc Coc and Microsoft Edge respectively.

Digital finance and the payment application race

With mobile browsers, the top 3 browsers favored by Vietnamese people are Chrome, Safari and Coc Coc. 

According to DecisionLab's assessment, despite being a domestic browser, Coc Coc is maintaining a solid position when standing next to big names from internationally.

This browser's PC penetration rate is currently at 59% of Internet users, second only to Google Chrome (83%), while far ahead of other browsers.

Vietnamese users prefer domestic platforms

Although the number of mobile users is lower than foreign products, the Vietnamese browser has the highest net user incentive index (NPS).

This shows the connection of a domestic digital technology platform with the local people.

Domestic newspapers and news sites are narrowing the gap to become the first choice when users need to view news.

In the field of digital finance, MoMo currently maintains the leading position in Vietnam in this segment with a penetration level of up to 69%.

Vietnamese users prefer domestic platforms

Ranked in the next positions in terms of penetration rate are ZaloPay (44%), banking applications (35%), ViettelPay (27%), ShopeePay (26%), VNPAY (17%). 

DecisionLab said that banking applications in Vietnam are gaining momentum across all generations, with the core of GenZ users playing a role in driving the trend. 

When asked “What website or app do you use to read news?” 61% of Vietnamese users said they often read information through Facebook, 40% read news through Google. 

Domestic websites or applications are currently the choice of only 38% of users.  

Statistics show that domestic newspapers and news sites are currently the top choice of generation X and generation Y users (Gen Y, born from 1981 to 1996) and ranked 2nd in the list of choices of generation Z (after Facebook).
