AI can take jobs in some fields, but also create attractive new professions, including prompt engineers.
Karin Kimbrough, lead economist at LinkedIn, said discussions about AI have skyrocketed on the professional social network over the past year.
LinkedIn recorded a significant increase in phrases such as “ChatGPT”, “prompt technology”, “command generation” and “generative AI” in the professional profiles of users around the world.
Job search application Adzuna also recorded a series of new positions appearing during the year, amid the AI creation boom.
"Command-prompt engineer could be the hottest job of 2024. This position didn't even exist before the emergence of generative AI, but now companies are competing to hire people who can take full advantage of the new technology. Demand for command-prompt engineers is small, but constantly growing as businesses look to unlock the power of generative AI," said Janes Neave, Adzuna's data science team leader. There were at least seven new ads looking for engineers posted in the UK in October, compared with none last year, according to Adzuna data.
They are called engineers, but the prompt maker does not necessarily know how to code or program.
Adzuna analysts also saw an increase in hiring for AI ethics officers, AI development directors, inspectors and trainers, and AI-related machine managers.
In the US, Adzuna data shows that more than 7,000 jobs require generative AI expertise, while 59,000 positions require knowledge of machine learning.
