*UPDATE: How the Instagram algorithm works in 2020
“How does the Instagram algorithm really work?”
It seems like the Instagram algorithm is making it harder than ever to reach your target audience, gain more followers, and improve engagement on your posts.
But the good news is that once you understand how the Instagram algorithm works, you can use it to build a groundbreaking effective Instagram strategy and continue to grow your account!
We debunk the rumors and cover everything you need to know about the Instagram algorithm in 2019 – it's time to take back control of your Instagram Marketing strategy this year!
Your Instagram feed isn't just based on who you follow, it's also based on who and what you like.
The more they think you'll like a post, the higher it appears in your feed.
When a post receives a lot of likes and comments, this signals to the Instagram algorithm that your post is quality, engaging content that many people will want to see.
That means content spreads very quickly on Instagram, but what it doesn't mean is that you only need thousands of likes for the Instagram algorithm to work for what you're aiming for.
You just need to focus on providing current and future quality content that customers will like and want to engage with:
When Instagram first shared news of the new algorithm last year, they said: The order of photos and videos on your home wall will be based on how likely you are to be interested in the content, your relationship with the poster, and the timeliness of the post.
They claim that the change is to improve user experience and prioritize the most memorable moments.
Along with these changes, many challenges for brands and businesses looking to grow engagement and following on Instagram gradually appear.
But luckily, there are ways to overcome it and get back on track!
When you consistently post content to Instagram, you will not only improve engagement, but you will also signal to the algorithm that you are a quality account!
And bThe more frequently and consistently you post, the more likely your audience will see and engage with your content.
When it comes to how often you should post, your ideal posting frequency will depend on your or your business's goals and the amount of time you can devote to your Instagram marketing.
If you get into the habit of posting multiple times a day and then switch to just a few times a week, social media expert Neil Patel shares, you'll start to lose followers and generate less engagement on each post.
The best posting frequency for Instagram is one that you can maintain consistently throughout breaks in your natural daily schedule.
Big brands like Gotoskincare can maintain posting twice, even three times a day thanks to a dedicated communications team, graphic designers and quality content created by user demand.
But don't let that discourage you – even if you only decide to post every 3 days, a quality article with smooth content will still bring good results as usual.
To help ensure you post consistently, you should become familiar with how to schedule your Instagram posts.
It's now believed that Instagram not only prioritizes posts with high engagement, but can also limit exposure based on your relationship with your followers.
If you comment a lot on someone's photos or are tagged in photos with them, this signals to Instagram that they may fall into your friends and family category.
So commenting on other accounts' posts, and responding to your own comments or direct messages, is extremely important if you want to grow on Instagram.
Use Instagram features like “Notification” and “Facebook page manager”
Treat comments like a conversation – you want to make sure you always respond and engage with comments on your feed to let the algorithm know you have a relationship with your followers.

Keeping track of all your Instagram comments is quite a task.
Instagram continues to roll out new features that make chatting with your followers easier than ever.
A great way to ensure you stay on top of the comments is to create more notable notifications in your Instagram settings.

Now your Instagram comments won't get lost in the clutter, so you can always make sure you're responding promptly to your followers.
PLUS: you can finally reply to Instagram direct messages from your desktop!
With Facebook's new unified Pages inbox, you can reply to messages from both Facebook Messenger and Instagram!
With access to the new feature, you'll see options for both Messenger and Instagram live when you open your Facebook Page inbox.
Receiving direct messages on Instagram and Facebook is a great sign that your followers are engaged with your brand and the content you're posting.

But dividing your attention between Facebook and Instagram messaging (and other social media sites, too) can be time-consuming and difficult to keep track of.
This will definitely speed up your workflow, facilitate better communication with your followers, and ultimately, drive more engagement!
If you regularly interact with a particular account, you're telling Instagram that you like that account's content.
This is probably why you often see your best friend or crush's Instagram posts at the top of your feed.
The same applies to you regularly engaging with a brand on Instagram – their profile is probably at the top of your feed list, with posts from your friends and family!
If you are a brand and your followers regularly like, comment, save content, or view your Instagram “stories,” your posts are more likely to be shown to them.
So it's more important than ever to take the time to build a consistent brand and aesthetic on Instagram.
The algorithm not only pays attention to the amount of engagement your Instagram post receives, but also the time the photo was posted.
If you post at a time when most of your followers are online, you'll have a better chance of gaining their likes quickly!
Using your “Instagram Insight,” you can use the metrics in the “Activity” section to find out the times of day when your audience is most active online.
How often do you open the Instagram app?
If you check the Instagram app less often, your feed will be organized more by what Instagram thinks you'll like, rather than by time.
How many friends follow you on Instagram?
If you don't think your feed shows the accounts you want to see, this might be a good time to do an unfollow discussion!

Once you mute an account, you can still see posts on their profile page and receive notifications about comments or posts in which you are tagged.
To mute an account, all you have to do is tap the (…) button in the upper right corner of any post.
If you spend a lot of time on Instagram, you'll see more posts because Instagram search digs deeper into its categories.
However, if you only spend a few minutes in the app each day, you'll only get the day's highlights from the algorithm.
When discussing the Instagram algorithm, most people immediately think of the content that shows up in their feed – but the algorithm also determines what you see on your Explore page, in your Inst-stories feed, and IGTV too!
Normally, stories in Insta-stories will appear almost first on the message board interface of those who are closest to you or interact with you the most.
The Insta – stories algorithm also focuses heavily on timeliness because it wants to ensure that it always shows you the latest stories from your favorite accounts.
Here are some tips to ensure your Insta-stories content stays top of your followers' feeds:
As the Instagram algorithm continues to change and impact user engagement, it's no surprise that more and more users are spending time on Instagram Stories, instead of their feed.
By posting to Insta-stories more often, you have a better chance of appearing at the top of your followers' home feed lists.
Regular engagement and activity, which is favored by the Instagram algorithm, will mean you'll also be more profitable using all of Instagram's native features.
The algorithm will also take into account follower interactions with your stories. The more users engage with your stories, the more likely it is that your posts will show up in their news feeds.
There have been a ton of new features added to Instagram Stories since launch, such as new Question and Ask labels, Polls and more.

While having engaging content on Instagram will help engage your audience from start to finish, Instagram sharing is all about having more information and inviting users to “tap and hold” the screen (this is what you do when you want to take a closer, longer look at an account's stories) so viewers can fully digest what they're sharing!
Is it the most effective way to do it?
This “press and hold” action is a great way to stick with your posts longer and get customers to dig deeper into your content.
If you're looking to grab your audience's attention, try using cute Instagram stickers or GIFs to keep them from scrolling past your content.
While IGTV is still relatively new, we're still learning how the algorithm works, but we expect it to be based on the same criteria as posts.
Instagram curates videos for you based on your interests and the people you follow, and you can also watch trending videos on popular YouTube channels!
Right now, there are 3 IGTV categories: “For you”, “Follower” and “Popular”.
So how do you make sure your IGTV videos have a better chance of being reached by new (and existing) customers?
Previously, IGTV videos only existed within your IGTV channel, which made it a bit difficult to get engagement and views.
To get views on your videos, you must add captions to regular posts or link your videos on stories and actively direct your followers to click on IGTV.

Now, if your in-feed preview gets a lot of engagement, it will not only lead viewers to your video in IGTV, but it will also signal to the algorithm you are creating IGTV quality videos for your audience, and others who might even like it will too.
Overall, posts in “Explore” and feed are mostly similar, providing you with the content Instagram thinks you'll be most interested in, based on your interactions.
When you tap to view your Instagram Explore page, it will look completely different than what might show up on your best friend's Explore page, because it's specifically designed to help you find new content you like, based on what you like to see on Instagram.
Earlier this year, Instagram launched topic channels on Explore with the aim of giving users a new way to discover content around their specific interests.

The Instagram algorithm is constantly learning from your behaviors on the app, like the accounts you follow, the posts you like and comment on, and the Instagram Stories and IGTV content you like to watch.
Start with the “For you” channel (which has a range of posts tailored to your broader interests), then you'll see channels on topics you might like, like Arts, Sports, Beauty or Fashion.

Luckily, posting your posts to your Instagram Explore page isn't as difficult as it sounds.
By optimizing your Instagram marketing strategy and making your posts algorithm-friendly by following the tips mentioned above, it will be very effective when others visit the Instagram Explore page – especially if you're using hashtags! The hashtags results page also follows the Instagram algorithm rules listed above.

Like the Explore page, these posts are selected based on a number of factors like engagement (how many likes and comments the post receives), hashtag popularity, and how quickly your posts receive engagement.
Tip: If you're a brand looking to search on Instagram Explore, It's more important than ever to focus on your niche topics and use hashtags to help categorize your posts!
