Today, there is a complete lack of respect for what it takes to build a business.
And I understand, because that's what is portrayed in the media that we see every day.
And there are tens of thousands of other “businesses” we don't hear about: People who failed miserably because they focused on building a toy with VC money instead of building a business that generates actual revenue?
Too many “entrepreneurs” today are focused on raising their next round of funding, and looking for ways to artificially increase the value of their company instead of focusing on what really matters: Build a sustainable business.
They operate as financial arbitrage machines, not actual businesses.
I constantly meet – day in and day out – people looking to fund their “ground-breaking” and “breakthrough” ideas.
When I started VaynerMedia, I did not raise any outside investments and to this day, I continue to operate on thin profit margins.
Why would I do that? patient.
So if you have the courage to want to build something that will stay with you for the rest of your life, to give you some freedom or some higher purpose then don't be disrespectful with what it takes to get there.
And to be fair, that lack of respect isn't necessarily your fault.
So all I ask is that we reframe the discussion around entrepreneurship.
There is only truth.
