From Apple, Samsung to startup Humane, all have plans to create AI Phones, while chip manufacturers are also ready to bring artificial AI to smartphones.
Artificial intelligence on phones is not new.
Because it is still new, there is currently no common concept of AI Phone, each manufacturer has its own definition and approach. Cnet, AI phones will have some common standards: using specialized chips for AI, handling intelligent and personalized tasks without needing an Internet connection, and deep learning about each user's habits.
"AI will transform everything, whether you use it in multiple applications or in a single application. For example, your photos will look better, unwanted noise will be removed from audio files... AI focuses on each person's personal experiences, from entertainment applications to performance, health and security," Prashant Mani, CEO, Motorola Asia-Pacific, told Economic Times.
Meanwhile, Canalys analyst Sheng Win Chow believes that AI Phone will bring mobile brands into the "peak smartphone era", not only reshaping smartphones but also the entire range of consumer electronics products.
The AI Phone era will only take place when chip manufacturers are ready to offer processors that can run generative AI models right on mobile devices.
At the annual Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii in October 2023, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile chip, allowing smartphones to use AI generation anytime, anywhere, even offline.
Previously, at the MWC event in February 2023 in Barcelona, Qualcomm demonstrated the ability to command AI to create a 15-second video in less than a second.
"In the 4G era, we see smartphones gradually becoming computers. With AI, we will witness an even stronger transformation of the phone," Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said at the Snapdragon conference.
Similarly, MediaTek's latest Dimensity 9300 chipset is also designed to handle generative AI tasks, being able to run models with up to 33 billion parameters.
By the end of 2023, Intel will also launch "Intel Core Ultra" at the AI Everywhere event specializing in AI laptops and may soon be applied to handheld devices such as tablets and phones.
Google can be considered the first mobile company to bring generative AI to smartphones, even though it is still at a primitive level.
Samsung also confirmed that the new generation Galaxy S model with the highlight of AI technology will launch on January 17.
Apple is said to have a different approach with AI Phone. Android Authority Accessed last month showed that Apple is looking to scale down the large language model (LLM) so that older generation iPhone users can also experience generative AI.
Not only big technology companies, the AI Phone race also opens up opportunities for startups.
