Engineers at startup Cognition Labs just launched Devin, an AI tool that automatically writes code.
In a video, Cognition Labs CEO Scott Wu demonstrates Devin's code authoring steps and workflow as it undertakes programming and data research projects.
Sharing with Bloomberg, Wu said “Training AI to be a programmer is a very deep algorithmic problem, requiring the system to make complex decisions and look into the future to decide which path to follow.”
In Bloomberg's tests, Devin knew basic game programming and created a website from scratch in just 20 minutes.
For example, a user asked Devin to create a website that maps all the Italian restaurants in Sydney.
Still, it's a bit ironic that software engineers are releasing AI tools designed to replace themselves. “It's not like a programming assistant but like a real worker, doing his own job,” computer scientist Silas Alberti said on Bloomberg.
Learning to code seems to be less and less important in the AI era.
"Our job is to create computer technology so that no one has to program. That programming language is people. Everyone in the world today is a programmer. That is the magic of AI," he stated.
The head of the world's most valuable chip company said that instead of spending time learning programming, people should learn skills to become experts in more useful fields such as biology, education, manufacturing, agriculture... However, his opinion was not accepted. “Over the past 30 years, I've heard countless times about 'XYZ will kill programming', but the reality is we still don't have enough programmers." According to him, AI does not destroy programming but puts it in the hands of more people.
