Threads launches and hits 10 million users

Meta's Threads social networking application on July 5 launched one day earlier than expected.

In just 7 hours of launch, Threads attracted 10 million registrations.

Outstanding features at launch

For comparison, Twitter's previous competitor Mastodon took several months to reach the 3 million registration mark.

According to a Meta blog post, Threads has many similarities with Twitter when it allows posting short articles of up to 500 characters, with links, images and videos lasting up to 5 minutes.

Many celebrity accounts had previously asked Meta to create a new app, according to Connor Hayes, VP of product.

In a series of posts when launching the new application, CEO Zuckerberg wrote: "I think we should have a public chat application with more than 1 billion active people. Twitter had a chance to achieve this but they have not succeeded. Hopefully we will." Currently Threads is available in app stores on both Android and iOS platforms in 120 countries.

According to Tech Crunch, investors are very excited about Threads because this new application has a close relationship with Instagram, which has the advantage of a relatively solid user base, as well as a network of advertising contracts.

The Guardian newspaper reported on July 7 that billionaire Elon Musk threatened to sue Meta for launching Threads, claiming that this application violated Twitter's intellectual property rights.

Attractions and doubts

“Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights and requires Meta to take immediate steps to cease using any of Twitter's trade secrets or other highly confidential information,” attorney Alex Spiro wrote.

As of the launch of Threads, Twitter was still limiting the number of tweets users could see each day – a measure Musk called “temporary” to combat crawlers.

Another attractive point, according to Mr. Connor Hayes, is that Threads is built on the same ActivityPub social media protocol as Mastodon and many other decentralized social networking applications.

However, many opinions also believe that although Threads has many advantages, it is not certain that it will win.
