In response to criticism from users, YouTube recently announced that it will remove overlay ads from content videos from April 6, 2023.
Overlay ads often appear as banners, obscuring or interrupting content playing on YouTube.
YouTube itself also admits that this is an old advertising format and causes discomfort for viewers.

"Overlay ads are an old format that only appeared on desktop computers and were annoying to viewers. We hope this move does not have too much of an impact on creators," YouTube stated.
However, YouTube's removal of overlay ads means the platform will offer other alternative forms of advertising.
For content creators, YouTube promises the change will have minimal impact as it shifts engagement to other ad formats.
