Google built a data center in Thailand

Google will build its first data center in Thailand to meet the growing demand for cloud and AI services in the region.

On September 30, Google announced that it would invest 36 billion baht, equivalent to one billion USD, in Thailand to build a data center, expected to be located in an industrial park in Chonburi province.

Investment of 36 billion baht

In the blog post, Jackie Wang, Country Manager for Google Thailand, said the infrastructure is intended to “support growing demand for Google Cloud and AI innovations, as well as popular services like Google Search, Maps, and Workspace” in the country.

Thailand's digital economic position

In addition, with a large amount of investment, the data center is said to "open up new opportunities for businesses, educators and all Thai people". Citing research by Deloitte, Google said the project could create an average of 14,000 jobs per year here until 2029.

Thailand has the second digital economy in Southeast Asia, after Indonesia and above Vietnam, according to a 2023 report by Google and Temasek. Reuters quoted Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra as saying this investment is "fully consistent" with the country's Cloud policy. Previously, in November 2023, Thailand and Google signed an agreement focusing on developing digital infrastructure and promoting responsible AI adoption. In May, the country also received investment from Microsoft to build its first data center.

According to CNBC, Google is stepping up its presence in Southeast Asia, where the digital economy is worth $218 billion.

In August, Reuters Citing some sources, Google is also in the process of discussing building a hyperscale data center in Vietnam, but the results of this process are unclear.
